30/09/13 - Hai Duong to Hai Phong

We had a big breakfast then went back to the room for a few hours before checkout so we didn’t get to the hotel too early to check in again. Johanna still has a cold and it is making her more tired than usual. We left at 9.30, but had to wait for ages as the reception got a message from the chambermaids that one dressing gown was missing. No idea what that was about as we didn’t use them at all. After about a 30 min wait outside with the bikes loaded and ready to go, the main manager came down and apologised and we were off! The route was along a main road all day, but short. We stopped to buy masks and get a nice cold can of winter melon juice halfway (weird taste). The side of the road was busier than the two main lanes with bike and motorbike traffic, 50% going wrong way. Haiphong is 3rd largest city in Vietnam, but only has half a page in the Lonely Planet guide. It is just a big port town. We sorted out the boat for the morning, and had some food in a Thai place which was excellent.
