Didn’t sleep well, had about 4
broken hours after 2am but forced out of bed at 8am by hunger. Had great
Pho in hotel for breakfast with plenty of extra chillies to get a kick
start. Headed out to see the temple of Literature. Very hot today with
strong sun. Really start to notice the smog, need to get a couple of
masks so at least the nasal passageways stay unclogged. Ho Chi Min
Mausoleum is closed as he is off in Russia getting a facial so we didn’t
go. Instead we searched for a new screw for the SPD pedals on my shoes.
Tried few mechanics and small shops, then walked 3km to a GIANT
retailer. Super helpful guys had a set of pedals with correct screw, but
couldn't separate the set, and wanted £33 for the pedals so had to say
no. Looked through all their boxes of spares and took bolts off bikes
but no luck.
Got back to area of hotel to meet Alex,
friend of a friend who runs motorbike tour in Hanoi. Had a good chat in
café about routes, Vietnam, Vietnamese and everything else. We have
since decided that we should not miss out on the area north of Hanoi, so
will make a round trip after Cat Ba, along northern border (with China)
and over to Sapa. Looks like a real adventure.
Went to
see Alex's mechanics who had a rifle through some boxes of bolts and
found me one that I could use to fix my SPD clip. No charge. Cheers
Gents! Getting there and back on Alex's old 125cc Minsk was fun. I don’t
think the old girl appreciated my extra 90kg's on her tired shocks, but
made it happily.
