08/12/13 - Sadec to Rach Gia

Today, 100 odd kms to "Zack Yaa", our last cycle before heading to Phu Quoc island for a few days in the sun.

The cycle was pretty straight forward, nothing out of the ordinary. After about 40km however, we came to a huge river and realised that there was no bridge to cross. Greg hadn't spotted that when creating the route, DOH! The route had been OK though as it took us to a ferry, crossing the 100m or so to the other side Luckily there was a ferry just about to leave when we rolled up. We didn't have much time to consider, paid our 26p fare (per person including bikes!) at the ticket office and got on the totally packed ferry much to the surprise of the other passengers. The crossing took about 10mins, simpelz!

After that we were looking forward to about 60km of the straightest road that I have ever seen on a map. I have to say it wasn't the most pleasant part of the cycle, not only due to the straightness of the road and the heat but also the road surface was unbearable. The tarmac was worn down to the base layer of chunky gravel rocks making it a very bumpy ride. The constant potholes didn't help either. For some reason Greg after feeling fine all all day, suddenly came over all funny and started to lose his balance. We stopped in a café and drank a few cokes until he felt better. It was a hot day so I guess it was heat related.

Finally, after which really felt like a long day we arrived in Rach Gia. Luckily we had a hotel booked. We both wouldn't have wanted to start hunting for a hotel at this point. The hotel was nice, but once again empty. Rach Gia itself was similar to our hotel. A place which seemed to have invested a lot of money in karaoke clubs, a huge Marina entertainment complex and shopping mall, but the tourism but it just hadn't happened. It was all aimed at local tourists, not for foreigners. Maybe we are just at the wrong end of town and it is all happening near the harbour. We wimped out of cycling all the way to the town for dinner and decided to go up to a shopping mall in the area as I needed some things and actually had a Vietnam McDonalds burger meal - the shame!

The hotel reception helped us organise our boat tickets to Phu Quoc for the next day, £15 each including bikes. This saved us the time of having to get the tickets at the office in the morning.

With the last big stop of Vietnam on Phu Quoc island, our time in this lovely country is slowly coming to an end.
