06/11/13 - Phu Phong to Son Trach

The last day in our 4-day marathon would take us another 130km arrivng in Son Trach, a town on the edge of the Phu Phong National Park where the worlds largest cave was. Not as flat as previous days, we had a fair climb throughout the day, with a bit of a peak at the end as we passed the gates of the National Park, before downhill into Son Trach.

It was WET today. It hardly stopped all day going from torrential to drizzle and back for the duration. All the rivers were flooded, breaking their banks into fields and over roads. On the downhill section, there had been several landslides which they were clearing up, in the middle of a torrent on the road. It must have been quite bad in the last few days, the road must have been blocked so we were lucky. The valley at the bottom had been totally flooded as well, with sand and rocks and plenty of trees and bushes deposited on the road by the water. Again, we were lucky to get through.

We arrived in the rain at our pre-booked and quite nice hotel, happy to get into some shelter. We congratulated ourselves on achieving our goal of 570km in 4 days and looked forward to a couple of days off.
